Long Walk Home

I’m a Big Heart Club Member

I have pledged to choose love over hate to show people experiencing homelessness that they are not alone.

The Last Day

Walking around the Isle of Wight was completed today - 115.7km of delightful discovery, a journey through time and place. This last afternoon was spent at beautiful Quarr Abbey with chanted vespers at the end of the day followed by a short walk on the second longest pier in England to buy my ferry ticket back to the mainland.

99 kilometres completed!

Even though the Long Walk Home page has cleared last week’s walking, in real life I have completed 99 kilometres around the island, with one day to go.
Thank you all for your fabulous donations, support and encouragement.

A place called Home

The Isle of Wight has been settled for a very long time and it’s easy to see why : a safe, fertile island with a moderate climate and ample resources for living a comfortable life. From Neolithic burial mounds to Roman villas and baths, quaint pubs and thatched cottages, public housing, affordable housing, houseboats, bungalows and Victorian seaside mansions. Everyone needs a place to call Home.

The Cliff Edge

Walking the crumbling cliff edge in a high wind - not for the faint hearted. Some sections already slipped into the sea, others cracked and poised, waiting for the next gale, fence posts moved backwards towards the fields where cows graze oblivious to the encroaching loss of land.

In Sickness and in Health

I have had a sore throat for a few days now, it has restricted my talking but it hasn’t stopped me walking. Even though I’m a bit slower on the hills, nothing is as exhilarating to me as walking through landscape with far reaching views or the dappled light of green woodland.
Today I walked along the ‘spine’ of the island, from this high vantage point seeing the northern coast and the mainland, then as I emerged from a canopy of trees, the chalk cliffs of the south coast appeared … and as I approached the western tip, both sides of the island and far off to the distant shoreline.

Walking the Wight

Started walking from Newport to Newtown, a tiny settlement with a historic town hall and beautiful nature reserve. (Nothing like the suburbs of the same name in Sydney!) Traffic jams here consist of curious cows and horses. At the end of the day flocks of Canada Geese were leaving Newtown Wetlands for their long flight home.

Warming up with King Charles III

The King Charles III walking track goes around the coast of England, pics below show a tiny section : The Chalk Walk from Seaford to Seven Sisters which I walked with my sister.

Support my Long Walk Home to Help People in Crisis

This year I will be participating from the other side of the World : I will be fulfilling a childhood dream of walking around the Isle of Wight, in the south of England. It has taken me many decades for this dream to become a reality. By walking and fundraising for The Long Walk Home we can help to bring a few more dreams that little bit nearer for others.

When I walk, I travel light - by choice.
If I sleep rough or in a dormitory, it is by choice.
If I miss a meal or a shower, I know I will be able to eat and wash later.
Many people in our community do not have those choices.

Every week, a person sleeping rough on our streets walks 28km to find shelter or a safe place to sleep.

Please sponsor my challenge to support the most vulnerable people in our community.

Every step I take and every dollar you help me raise delivers love, care and support to people experiencing homelessness or in crisis. Thank you!

So far I helped deliver:

102

care packs

511

home-cooked meals

40

days crisis accommodation

…to people sleeping rough on our streets or in crisis.
