Long Walk Home

I’m a Big Heart Club Member

I have pledged to choose love over hate to show people experiencing homelessness that they are not alone.

I choose love over hate ❀️

Look what I got today! WOW! Wayside Chapel's Long Walk Home is getting real. On the day I'll also be wearing a very snazzy hi-vis vest so you won't be able to miss me 😎
Thank you to Natalie Blunden Maddock for your very generous support β€” plus a shout out to my anonymous benefactor. I love a mysterious donor! You can donate here (anonymously or not) β€”http://bit.ly/alexlongwalkhome ⚑️
I've joined 'Team Scott' with a bunch of my awesome colleagues. Scott found himself in the depths of addiction and sleeping rough in his teens after a family breakdown. Facing some tough challenges throughout the years, Scott is determined to get his life back on track πŸ’ͺ🏼
Scott is taking on the challenge to stand with Wayside Chapel, which has become for him a place of hope. It's here he met his Care Coordinator and my friend, Joe who has helped him secure housing and build essential life skills. Scott and Joe are legends and I am privileged to know them both πŸ₯°

Saddest Cat in the World

Campaigning for the 'Long Walk Home' took a back seat today due to a family emergency πŸ₯ Our scrappy boy, Gingernuts went 'toe-to-toe' (quite literally) with the neighbourhood Tom and lost a claw πŸ¦€ Ouch! Here he is doing his best impression of the Saddest Cat in the World 😞 #SadCat
You can make him happy by donating to Wayside Chapel at bit.ly/alexlongwalkhome πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ I'm walking 28km in support of those sleeping rough. Why 28km? Because that's about how long a person experiencing homelessness walks every week to find safe shelter and support πŸ’œ
Were it not for the incredible generosity of Alyson Kakakios, Vicki Long and Ellaina Welsman, today might have be a comple

On the importance of stretching

Day 3 on the 'Long Walk Home' campaign trail: can report back that yesterday's potential blister did not materialise. Hallelujah πŸ™ŒπŸΌBut just to be on the safe side, today I focused on stretching πŸ™†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Mother Hen Jennifer delivered some #realtalk about my sciatic nerve and I'm not one to poo poo good advice. Thanks Jen! It's feeling better already ❀️
Today's stretches are brought to you by my epic sponsors β€” Katie Rose, Vane Chavez, Deepa Rose Sealy and Katie Couani. These four awesome humans have taken a punt on an underdog with some very long odds. I won't let you down! We're already at $364 in just three days. Wow 🀩 🀩 🀩
Don't forget to get in on the action peeps. You can sponsor me at bit.ly/alexlongwalkhome πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ I'm raising money for Wayside Chapel and folks living on and around the streets of Kings Cross. They're a mad bunch of people β€” you should come down some time. It's the only place in Kings Cross where you can get a hearty and healthy meal for the bargain price of $4. Seriously, my morning coffee costs more than that. Anyway, back to the stretches...

A tough day on the campaign trail 😩

Tough day on the 'Long Walk Home' campaign trail, friends. After my epic 2km walk yesterday, my back twinge turned into sciatic pain. I also discovered that my very expensive and specialised running socks fall down at my heal. Can feel a blister forming. Will report back 🦢🏼
Incredibly generous donations from Gabrielle Bryant and Fusako Nambu made all the pain worth it β€” we're at $181. Also, today I got to spend half an hour knitting with T. He's a Wayside visitor who's studying Community Services. He's on work placement at the moment and we were talking craft therapy. This is the joy of Wayside β€” you just never know where your day with take you and what stories you'll get to hear ❀️
Don't forget to throw me some coin and raise money for Wayside Chapel and people experiencing homelessness: bit.ly/alexlongwalkhome. Help me reach my $2000 goal πŸ’°Trust me, I'm not doing all this walking for my health 🀣

I bought a sports bra πŸƒπŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Friends, on October 7 this year I’m walking in Wayside Chapel’s Long Walk Home πŸ‘£ It’s a 28km walk from Parramatta to Kings Cross. On average a person experiencing homelessness walks about 28km every week to access vital support services and to find a safe place to sleep πŸ’€
You might remember last year I made a VERY last minute decision to participate, having done zero training (or basically any exercise in the previous five years) πŸ₯΅ The event got cancelled due to electrical storms (probs for the best) and I promised I would walk next year.
Well, next year is here and I won’t be making the same mistake again πŸ‘Ÿ Today I’m launching my campaign to raise $2000 for Wayside Chapel. You can donate here: http://bit.ly/alexlongwalkhome ❀️
Stay tuned for updates from the campaign trail β€” it’s gonna be brutal 🀯

Thank you for community, Wayside Chapel ❀️

My name is Alex and I am lucky enough to work at the Wayside Chapel. I see everyday the strength and tenacity of those who walk through our doors and I'm humbled by it.Β

I have received many blessings in life, none of them earned. I am simply lucky...and I see how easy it is to become "unlucky". A couple of not-great decisions, some shitty circumstances, some bad timing β€” there but for the grace of God go I.

I am so grateful for places like Wayside. No only is there practical support for people who need it. But there is also the community that is created for those who need it. People like me. I need Wayside just as much as Wayside needs me (probably more so). Walking in the Long Walk Home is my way of saying thank you.Β

So far I helped deliver:

117

care packs

584

home-cooked meals
