Homelessness and Death

The abs census of 2021 reported the increased in death rates among homeless people across all racial groups.

We know Homelessness worsens health and shortens life expectancy.

I’m tired today from walking each day. I have a home, a bed to sleep in, good food and health.

Regional NSW

In Regional NSW, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Batmen’s Bay saw a 15.4% increase in homelessness. (2016-2021)

Indigenous Australians over-represented in Homeless Population

I’m halfway.

This morning while walking I came across a young woman sleeping rough in the gardens close up by a toilet block. At first I through it was a lot of black sacks then realised a person was there. I’m always surprised when and where one finds people sleeping rough.

Indigenous Kids 0-12 years

I have found it confronting reading about the number of Indigenous kids who are homeless and needing support services.

Indigenous children aged 0–14 were more likely to receive assistance through homelessness services than non-Indigenous children (71 per 1,000 Indigenous children compared with 9.0 per 1,000 non-Indigenous children). AIHW.GOV.Au (august 23)

The Shock of How Many Children Needed Help 2020-2021

Reading about the 62,300 children 0-14 years of age needing help and receiving help from specialist homelessness services is salutary.

Surprising Numbers of Children - Homeless

When researching homeless by age I was very taken aback by the number of kids who were identified as homeless in the census. Did this surprise you too? It made me sad.
